What’s in the October 2026 Gezèt?
Issue no. 5 celebrates the return of Petit Paris, the French street festival that turned the Jekerkwartier upside down in September. Inside you will find:
The square
Petit Paris is back
On Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September the 1960s street festival Petit Paris returned, this time in the Jekerkwartier. Maastricht artists performed on three stages: by an eight-metre-high Eiffel Tower in front of the Minderbroederskerk, at Le Moulin Rouge on the square opposite LURE, and at Le Bistrot Parisien on the corner of the Stenenbrug and the Koestraat. There was cancan dancing, burlesque and pétanque.

Art on the square
The statue ‘Levensvreugde’ (Joy of Life)
High on a column on our square stands a mother with her four playing children. Willem Hofhuizen designed the statue in 1956, and it was unveiled on 22 June 1957. The column comes from the Basilica of Our Lady. Locally it is also known as ‘the Child Benefit monument’.
From the city
A distillery within the city walls
Master distiller Haris Puzic of City Distillery makes 7 Omens London Dry Gin in Maastricht, with seven ingredients including wild Limburg marjoram and hops. With him you can distil your own bottle in two hours. At LURE you can enjoy 7 Omens as a gin and tonic.
Poetry
The Jekerkwartier in a poem
Maastricht city poet Jan Janssen wrote a poem about the Jekerkwartier, with a walk through the neighbourhood: from the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein and the Koestraat via the Sint Pieterstraat and the old city wall to the Grote Looiersstraat.
